Westfield London Boasts Largest Shopping Center in Europe

by -

A £600 million extension has made Westfield London the biggest shopping mall in all of Europe. The addition makes the shopping center larger than both Aviapark in Moscow as well as Zagreb’s Westgate.

The Difference £600 Million Makes

As the massive extension opens, the Westfield London mall has become the biggest shopping center in the continent. The expansion added 740,000 square feet (225,552 square meters) to the pre-existing size of the mall. This new extension brings the total size of the facility to about 2.6 million square feet (792,000 square meters). This explains why its size has now propelled it well beyond the largest shopping center in Moscow, Russia and in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Westfield London shopping center’s new extension is launching a full half-year ahead of its scheduled opening. The expansion will open in phases as opposed to opening all the doors at once.

Massive New Retail Locations

The central feature of the new expansion is a brand new, state of the art John Lewis department store. It sprawls over four levels, with 230,000 square feet (about 70,100 square meters) of floor space. Other large outlets launching new locations within the shopping center include Ugg, H&M, Cath Kidston, and The White Company. Each of these brands is looking forward to opening the doors to their larger outlet shops.

Westfield London will also feature a new public events space called Westfield Square. It will host various forms of events while surrounding attendees with dining, shops, and leisure outlets. The Westfield Square is slated to open this summer.

Employment Opportunities

Once the full extension has opened, it will have created 8,000 new jobs. This will bring the total employment for Westfield London to about 20,000.

“The further investment ahead of the centre’s 10th anniversary year is testimony to the strength of Westfield London, which experiences high retail demand for space from luxury and high street brands looking to house their flagship stores, along with first to market dining and leisure concepts,” said Westfield Europe’s chief operating officer, Peter Miller.

“We’re particularly pleased to have Westfield London working with us to build economic growth that works for all our residents,” said Hammersmith and Fulham Council leader, Stephen Cowan. “In this latest phase, we have negotiated new social housing, new jobs and new infrastructure that will benefit our residents.”
