After months of looking like it was increasingly likely a Brexit deal would occur, May could be getting close.
Brussels said the Brexit talks now have new momentum and progress is being made in several areas.
EU Says Talks Gaining Momentum
For months, it has looked as though there wouldn’t be a Brexit deal in time for the U.K.’s departure from the European Union. That said, negotiators in Brussels have said that the talks are now starting to regain momentum.
That said, Downing Street has been more reserved about its enthusiasm and has been careful to keep over-excitement under control, over the chances of a deal. Still, senior figures from the European Union are already talking about much more positive chances of reaching a deal now than there were a few weeks ago.
“Achieve an Exit Deal”
“I have a hope, which is close to certainty, that at the end we’ll manage to achieve an exit deal and a declaration about future relations which will be the best possible,” said Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council.
Only slightly before Tusk made his statement, Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, told the media his optimism was growing. “I have reason to think that the potential for rapprochement between both sides has increased in recent days.”
Downing Street’s Perspective
Downing Street wasn’t as convinced that Great Britain and the European Union were that close to a deal.
“We have always said we are working hard for a deal this autumn and that continues at pace,” said a spokesperson for Prime Minister Theresa May at a press briefing. “There is a difference between people talking optimistically about a deal … and it actually being agreed. There are still big issues to be worked through.”
Downing Street was also more reserved about its enthusiasm regarding the E.U.’s plan to outline it’s future U.K. relationship in a document without much detail, but that will be a key component to the Brexit deal. Critics have said that will lead to nothing more than a “blind Brexit.”
“There can be no agreement without a precise future framework,” said the prime minister’s spokesperson.
