Apple’s mobile devices might get the most attention, but the company recently announced updates to its desktop and laptop computers that could have a big effect on how we use computers.

New iMac Pro

Apple’s desktop computer, the iMac Pro, received a slew of updates that were announced at the company’s recent development conference. Apple is hoping the upgrades appeal to professional-level users who have moved away from the iMac Pro since there hasn’t been a notable upgrade since 2013.

A new iMac Pro comes in a sleek space grey color and will feature a 27-inch 5K screen and have an optional 18-core processor, making it the most powerful Mac computer ever. It comes with the Intel Core i7 4.2 GHz chip, 500GB of SSD storage, and 16GB of RAM. It also features dual centrifugal fans to allow for more airflow than in the past, which has led to an 80% increase in cooling capacity.

According to Apple, the new fan system “allows for upgraded internals without making more noise.” The company also stated, “We reengineered the whole system and designed an entirely new thermal architecture to pack extraordinary performance into the elegant, quiet iMac enclosure our customers love—iMac Pro is a huge step forward and there’s never been anything like it.”

Apple is already marketing this as the computer of the future, saying it has enough computing power to work with virtual reality and machine learning development, two industries that are poised for tremendous growth. The computer won’t feature touchscreen like some other computers in the space, but Apple points to the new iPad Pro for its touchscreen and drawing ability.

The iMac Pro will also feature 10Gb Ethernet, which has never been available on a Mac before. The feature will lead to 10 times faster networking, and the computer also has four Thunderbolt 3.0 ports to add additional monitors or extra storage.

Apple still leading in computers

It will start at $4,999 and be available in December. Although the price tag may seem high, Apple claims a similar PC product would run closer to $7,000.

Reaching a New Audience

The iMac Pro has long been a favorite of creative professionals for its sleek design, computing power, and technical abilities. However, that enthusiasm has waned in recent years with increased competition from other computers and a lack of updates from Apple.

Apple is hoping the upgrades can bring customers back and expand the iMac Pro to a new generation of professionals. It teased the release of updates back in April, but users only first saw the finished product last week.

Early versions of the new software on the iMac are available now, and the results from professionals have been good, with most saying that the increased speed and ability makes it faster, easier, and more enjoyable to perform tasks like editing videos and photos, which is a very common use for the iMac Pro.

Apple’s announcement is also seen as a response to the Microsoft Surface Studio, which is being sold as a powerful but less expensive alternative to the iMac Pro. With these new updates, competition between the two tech giants just moved to another level.

The sleek new iMac Pro will mix up the desktop computer market when it is released at the end of the year. With a new look and strong new features, it could return to its position as the computer of choice for creative professionals.
